The Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde Social Justice Breakfast

January 10, 2012

Atlanta, GA   The Bayard Rustin/Audre Lorde Breakfast planning group is happy to announce that Paulina Helm-Hernandez, Co- Director of Southerners On New Ground (SONG) will serve as the Honorary LGBT Marshal  & Speaker for the 2012 Martin Luther King Jr  Rally near the MLK Center for Non-Violent Social Change. The MLK Rally will immediately follow the MLK March on Monday, January 16th 1:30pm.  Paulina  Helm-Hernandez  was chosen because of her commitment to community building with marginalized populations. She has a background in farm worker and immigrant / refugee rights organizing, cultural work, youth organizing, anti-violence work, and liberation work that centers people most affected by violence, poverty, war and racism.

The Rustin/Lorde Breakfast will be held Monday, January 16th 10am at St. Mark United Methodist Church 781 Peachtree St Atlanta, GA 30308. Donations are welcome! Event participants will include community organizers Adolph St. Arromand, Cara Page, Holliday Simmons, LaMont Sims, Paris Hatcher, and Taliba. The Rustin/Lorde Breakfast, founded in 2002 by Craig Washington and Darlene Hudson, will be one of several activities featured across the U.S. in observance of the 100th anniversary of Bayard Rustin’s birthday on March 17, 2012.  Mandy Carter, National Coordinator of the Bayard Rustin Centennial project of the National Black Justice Coalition announced that “throughout 2012, the Bayard Rustin Centennial will celebrate Rustin’s monumental contributions to the U.S. Civil Rights movement and international social justice efforts”. A special screening of “Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin” and “The Edge of Each Others Battles: The Vision of Audre Lorde” will be held at the Phillip Rush Center at 1530 Dekalb Ave NE, Atlanta, GA 30307 on Saturday, January 14th 4:00pm.
