It’s the NFL draft! From May 8-10 we will see the match up of teams and players. Lots of energy and excitement!
Among the excitement is a HUGE moment in NFL history. Michael Sam is poised to be the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. Which team will get him? We don’t know that, but we can send a strong message of support for Michael on Draft Day and beyond.
Send a message on Twitter: I’ll be cheering for Michael Sam during the #NFLDraft2014. NFL Draft May 8-10 #SamFans http://www.glaad.org/samfans
When Sam is drafted, we’ll offer up a collective cheer at this significant moment when the NFL has an openly gay player. And no matter our team loyalty, we’ll continue to cheer for Sam as he breaks barriers.
Outsports.com provides more details:
As the suggested tweet says, we don’t know which day he’ll be drafted. The NFL Draft is divided into three days:
- Thursday, May 8, 8pm-11pm: Round 1
- Friday, May 9, 7pm-11pm: Rounds 2 & 3
- Saturday, May 10, 12pm-8pm: Rounds 4-7
While the last eight SEC Defensive Players of the Year have gone in the first round, Sam will almost definitely not be drafted on Thursday, and he most likely won’t be selected in the second round. There is a chance he is drafted in the third, so the real “Sam Draft Watch” will start Friday afternoon.
The chances of him not being drafted at all are virtually zero.
This is a time to celebrate for our community. So tweet, Facebook, and get your popcorn ready. The Draft will be aired live on ESPN and the NFL Network.
