Hotter Than July welcomes Bishop Rev. Dr. Yvette A. Flunder to Detroit

May 7, 2024, Detroit, MI: Answering the community’s call, LGBT Detroit, the nation’s premier Black LGBTQ+ service provider and producer of Hotter Than July, returns and leans into a realized theme, “Be Glad It’s Hotter Than July.” Beloved for 29 years, Hotter Than July is also the world’s longest-running, uninterrupted Black Pride celebration. This year’s three-day community gathering will run from Friday, July 26 to Sunday, July 28.

This year, Bishop Rev. Dr. Yvette A. Flunder comes to Detroit and joins The Hotter Than July Worship Service, the People of African Descent (PAD) Conference, and the Gospel & Soul Concert.

“Hotter Than July is thrilled to welcome a national pillar of many communities,” says A. Nzere Kwabena, executive director of LGBT Detroit. “With the help of Detroit’s leading faith leaders, Bishop Flunder teaches, preaches, and performs during the weekend.” The Bishop will lead the PAD Conference and preach at the Hotter Than July Worship Service.

LGBT Detroit hosts the international Hotter Than July Gospel & Soul Concert, with title sponsor MotorCity Casino Hotel’s Sound Board. The concert, featuring the superstar Grammy-nominated artist B.Slade, will be held on Sunday, July 28, at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are available now via Ticketmaster

“We have been hosting the Hotter Than July Worship Service for the past seven years,” states Pastor Jeffrey M. Seals of One Church Detroit. “This year, we will partner with Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit and are glad to come together, worship, build community, and make new friends.”

Rev. Dr. Roland Stringfellow of Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit joins in: “MCC Detroit is honored to participate in an event that facilitates the breaking down of stigma that African American People of Faith do not support the LGBTQ community. The concert will serve as a bridge to unite communities that the fear of difference has long separated.”

About Bishop Rev. Dr. Yvette Flunder: Bishop Flunder, a San Francisco native and the Presiding Bishop of The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, has served her call through prophetic action and ministry for justice for over thirty years. She is a DEMOS board member and Senior Fellow at Auburn Theological Seminary and Andover Newton Seminary has served as an Adjunct Professor and speaker at numerous seminaries and universities and is an award-winning gospel music artist and author.
