We’re T-minus eight days away from the 2023 Esteem Awards, the annual celebration of honor which takes place during Chicago’s Black Gay weekend. I feel like a restless kid on Christmas Eve who won’t sleep in anticipation of what the big day will bring.
I’m proud to announce the Esteem Awards and Black Alphabet Film Fest have partnered to bring our first Poetry Slam event to celebrate Black Pride. On July 3, this historic event is sponsored by the Chicago Department of Public Health, Sidetrack, DCASE, AIDS Foundation Chicago, and AIDS Health Foundation. It takes place at Sidetrack from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Activist and spoken-word Icon Tim’m West will serve as host. Must be 21 to attend this free event.
Black Alphabet Film Fest, Chicago Urban Pride, Pride South Side | Chicago Windy City Black Pride, B. BLYSS! & PEACH, Lipstick & Lace/Mad Man Productions, David Dodd Events | Rails Marketing Group, High Society Entertainment Group, Club Escape, and Jeffery’s Pub offer a plethora of events for pride partygoers. Starting with the 16th Annual Esteem Awards, listed below is a run-down of everything taking place June 25 – July 4. The 16th Annual Esteem Awards
Join us for this in-person Celebration of Honor on Sat, July 1, at Sidetrack 3349 N. Halsted in Chicago from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
This year eleven individuals and five organizations will be recognized. The 2023 Esteem Awards is sponsored by The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) and AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC).
The Esteem Awards is a 501c3 organization dedicated to promoting positive images of the African American/People of Color, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning (LGBTQ)+ communities.

1st Annual Poetry Slam
Black Alphabet and The Esteem Awards.com will present their first annual poetry slam event in celebration of Black Pride. This event is sponsored by the Chicago Department of Public Health, Sidetrack, DCASE, AIDS Foundation Chicago, and AIDS Health Foundation.
Join us at Sidetrack 3349 N. Halsted in Chicago from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Contestants will be vying for a $2,023 grand prize. The event is free and open to the public.
