Mobile Homecoming co-founders Julia Roxanne Wallace and Alexis Pauline Gumbs will be participants at the 3rd Annual Black Lesbians United Retreat in Malibu, California. Julia and Alexis cherish the opportunity to build community at this intergenerational gathering of Black lesbians from around the country. Gumbs and Wallace will be on hand to document this year’s activities and also present footage from their upcoming documentary. The Mobile Homecoming project highlights the intergenerational impact of Black LGBTQ elders who have been trailblazers in the social justice movement, the creative arts, and within their communities.
The Mobile Homecoming project is an experiential archive that uses multiple forms of new media and interactive educational technologies to collect, archive and amplify the social organizing stories of Black LGBTQ folks in order to create lasting relationships and share resiliency practices across age. Julia and Alexis believe that “the stories of how trans and cis gender women, trans men and genderqueer black people grew their own bravery and created community are priceless resources for our communities and the communities of the future.”
During the retreat, Alexis and Julia will be documenting the history of BLU retreat, an event which serves as an important resource of community-building, self-care, and spiritual rejuvenation, for Black lesbians in Southern California, organized by a group of volunteers who have been carrying on this tradition for over twenty-five years. Alexis and Julia will also lead an interactive song-making workshop where participants will create a BLU(es) song together!
Julia Roxanne Wallace M. Div is a filmmaker, theology scholar and the founder of Queer Renaissance (queerrenaissance.com) a multimedia movement based on the premise that we can create the world anew through passionate pursuing our individual and collective purpose. Dr. Alexis Pauline Gumbs is a writer and educator with a PhD in English, Women’s Studies and Africana Studies, and the founder of BrokenBeautiful Press(brokenbeautifulpress.worpdress.com) and Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind (blackfeministmind.wordpress.com) an interactive community school and creation-space based in the transformative brilliance of Black feminist visionaries.
